Design: From Inspiration to Implementation

Design: From Inspiration to Implementation

Design: From Inspiration to Implementation is suitable for all students regardless of their prior design experience.

The novice designer will be introduced to the Principles and Elements of Design and some of the tools available for developing and recording sources of inspiration. We will also cover specific methods for taking inspiration sources from the idea stage to concrete design plans, and finally, how to translate those plans from paper to stitch.

The more experienced student will have an opportunity to hone her skills and knowledge and will be challenged to expand her horizons by looking at different and somewhat unusual sources for inspiration.

Experimentation is the key to this class, and all students will be encouraged to work outside their comfort zones in developing original and adapted designs.

By the end of this class the student will be able to:
Describe the design process
Develop personal sources of design inspiration
Define the Principles and Elements of Design and understand their importance in the development of effective designs
Create and use sketchbooks for development of design ideas and for future sources of inspiration
Create simple line drawings, value studies and color studies
Understand the use of the Golden Rectangle and Rule of Thirds in the creation of a good composition
Make and use viewfinders for developing compositions
Translate her/his design from paper to a pattern that can be stitched
Paint a simple design on the ground of choice
Enlarge drawn designs
Understand the difference between an original design, an adaptation, and an interpretation
Demonstrate Symmetrical, Radial, and Asymmetrical balance, Rhythm, Contrast, Focal point, Value, and Texture

Length: 4 days
